Emet Alpay
Environment Center Coordinator
Sustainable Communities Project Leader
MA Gender & Development
After moving to Australia in 1998 from her home country Turkey where she had worked in Geophysical engineering, Emet decided to focus on social and environmental issues.
Her work within Australian communities brought international recognition in 2000 after she lead a successful campaign against a cyanide based gold mining operation with company offices in both Australia and Turkey.
In 2007, Emet was acknowledged as a Peace Ambassador by the Universal Peace Federation for initiating the Innermost Gardens project which provides a holistic, cultural and environmental space for refugee and migrant women in Wellington.
Currently, Emet’s research is focused on Transition Towns, a concept which provides many opportunities for grass roots community building, leadership, and sustainability.
