Eliminating Waste

Businesses can reduce their waste in several ways.

Ideas to get started:

1. Get involved with waste exchanges.

The Waste Exchange has been set up to help businesses reduce their waste by advertising furniture or goods that they no longer require. These are either free or sold at a small cost.

2. Recycle office supplies

Use recycled or sustainably sourced paper and plastics and reuse ink cartridges by taking them to a local ink cartridge refiller.

Laser toners can be recycled through various outlets.

If you are holding an event, try and source local and organic food and use biodegradable plates, cups and cutlery.

3. Furnishing your office

Try to find second hand furniture - chairs, tables, filing cabinets, desks - if possible. If buying wooden furniture, make sure it is made from a sustainable source - look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo.

4. Recycle your computers.

The Ark gathers retired computers from businesses, government departments and individuals and gives them a new lease of life at schools and homes. Find out more.

For scrap metal recycling - Macauley Metals buys and sells non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel, lead, electrical and data cables, brass and radiators. They can also buy scrap steel for recycling.
