Schools & Kindergartens

Schools provide excellent opportunities for learning about and practicing sustainability.

As staff and students work to improve school systems, the knowledge they gain can be re-applied both at home and in the local community.

If you wish to make your school a more sustainable place, we recommend you look into becoming an Enviroschool. This comprehensive progamme has a great reputation throughout New Zealand and is leading the way in intergrating the principles of sustainability with mainstream education.

Our staff are happy to discuss the Trusts work with you and class visits can be arranged.

Ideas to get started:

1. Become an enviroschool.

Enviroschools uses a whole school approach to help students and teachers learn about sustainability. Schools can either sign up to the Faciliated Enviroschools Programme, the Enviroschools Awards Programme, or both.

For the first programme, schools sign up to a 3 year programme of environmental learning and action, co-ordinated by a trained facilitator. The second programme is an incentive scheme for schools to become actively involved in environmental education.

2. Walking School Buses

Walking School Buses provide a safe, active and and healthy way for children to get to School.

Walking buses are usually organised by parents, teachers and caregivers who share the task of leading a group of children to the school each week. Volunteers pick up kids and drop them off at specific stops on a designated walking route.

3. Organic Gardens.

Having an organic garden at school enables children to learn about food production and the food they eat.

3. Compost green waste and/or build a worm farm

So called "green waste" accounts for approximately 80% of total waste in schools. In many cases this waste is sent directly to landfill.

It is relatively simple to set up a worm farm, compost bin system or EM Bokashi. By having these systems in place you can divert the majority of waste produced within the school and prevent it entering landfill.

Waste Wise is an Organic Recycling Programme for schools. It is designed to create an awareness of waste issues and help schools improve their knowledge and understanding of waste reduction initiatives. Find out more.

4. Reduce, Re-use and Recycle non-green waste.

How about becoming a Zero Waste School?

The best place to start is by reducing the waste that comes into the school in the first place. Use products that can be reused and recycled, request the least packaging possible and buy recycled materials such as paper.                            Recycled Paper Options

Re-use paper, cardboard and other packaging again or use for art projects.

Recycle what waste you cannot reduce and re-use.

5. Be Energy Wise.

Energy efficiency initiatives not only save money but also contribute to  climate change mitigation.
