The  Eco Kiwi Good Newsletter

Issue 1 - February 08

Eco Kiwi has been running for just over two months now so it’s time to bring you some good news! Here are a few of the stories that our busy community networkers in Wellington and Otago have come across so far.  (NB all names have been changed)

Beth from Wellington decided to cut her twice weekly washing of clothes down to once a week using a full washing load

Aroha from Porirua was in the habit of washing her running clothes after each run so she decided to wash them in the shower she had after each run instead!

The Smith family from Porirua have decided to look into grey water plumbing systems so that they can pump their washing machine, dishes and shower water onto the garden

The Singh family from Porirua put a restrictor on the shower in the kid’s bathroom!

Jessie from Dunedin has decided to start making her own Muesli bars to cut back on packaging

Ana from Dunedin has decided to stop buying takeaway food to help reduce waste

A recent migrant from Malaysia who has been in Wellington for three months used to boil tap water and then leave it to cool down before drinking, which increased her energy use. She was happy that her household could drink water straight from a kitchen tap as this will definitely reduce her power bill

Bruce from Porirua was already doing lots to minimise his impact on the environment. After talking to Shanel he decided to place a brick in the cistern of his old toilet to reduce the amount of water it takes to fill it up (NB: the average single flush toilet uses 11 litres of water per flush! Using a brick or gizmo can save half of that per flush).
