The  Eco Kiwi Good Newsletter

Issue 3 - April 08

Eco Kiwi is in its fourth month now so here is yet more good news from our networkers!

Peri and Nigel from the Wellington team have both finished their contracts – thanks very much to both of you for all your hard work. The rest of the Wellington team have extended their contracts until the end of May.

The Otago team are focusing on group engagements such as through churches, playcentres and specifically organised workshops. Josie held an “eco-my-flat” workshop, which attracted a small number of very interested students. She plans on approaching more student flats.

All networkers are finishing up by the end of May at the latest so there is just one more month to go….

Here are some more examples of small changes that people have decided to make to their household in order to bring benefits to themselves and to the environment (NB most names have been changed).

Sophie Ward (Volunteer) and Megan Williams of the Wanaka Eco Kiwi team at the Upper Clutha A&P show.

Aaron from Dunedin decided to start up a carpooling network amongst his surfing mates.

Marnie from Wellington is going to start buying eco-friendly cleaning products

Bruce from Wanaka cleaned out his freezer to make more room and save on energy use – he’s noticed his freezer is a lot quieter.

Liam from Dunedin decided to hang out with his flatmates more in their lounge rather than all being in their own rooms with separate heaters on.

Shari from Wellington has decided to start a community composting initiative (providing old wood and technical advice for people around the neighbourhood to build a compost bin).

Tim from Wellington has asked his landlord to insulate his flat.

Samantha and Richard from Dunedin decided to start catching the water from their shower before it heats up and also from their sink when they are rinsing rice or vegetables to use on their garden. They are going to keep a watering can and big funnel inside to make the system easier.

Rob from Wellington is now cycling to work rather than taking the car.

Aria from Dunedin decided to not buy anything new all year (apart from underwear!).

Li Chang from Wellington is now sorting her recycling better after receiving resources in Chinese (thanks to Grace for sourcing these).

Tina from Dunedin has committed to two car-free days where her and her children only catch the bus and go to places on the bus route only.

Bob and Jane from Dunedin have decided to get chickens to eat their kitchen scraps.

Ieuan from Central Otago has decided to set up a “Hitching Post” carpooling system, whereby people needing a lift to and from settlements approx 15km out of Wanaka wait at the various “hitching posts” and receive a ride from people in cars willing to take them.

Sonia from Te Kuiti has convinced her workplace to switch to rechargeable batteries.

Sasha from Wellington is going to install solar water heating when they move to Greymouth later this year.
