The Eco Kiwi project is a new service available to individuals, groups and communities in various regions around New Zealand.

Through the Ecokiwi scheme our networkers help ordinary New Zealanders think about how they could make a few small changes that really help the environment, whilst bringing them other benefits too. For example, reducing the number of times we do our shopping each week means we use the car less at the same time as cutting down the time spent shopping. Result? Less emissions, more time to be doing something nice!

That is where our community networkers come in. Everyone’s needs and priorities are different. That’s why we believe in the importance of talking and listening, rather than just ‘telling’.

Our community networkers get out and about in the community, talking and listening to groups and individuals and providing individualised support to help us all make those little changes that can really make a difference.

All our networkers are provided with training and information to help them respond effectively to a wide range of needs. From simple things like up-to-date bus timetables for those seeking to make better use of public transport, to more specialised info such as the most energy efficient washing machine to buy. In addition, Sustainability Trust is working collaboratively with the Sustainable Living Program in order to make best use of their available resources, achieve maximum coverage and provide the best possible service to the general public.

We’ll also be collecting information about what people are doing, so that we can help build up a picture of how New Zealand is becoming more sustainable as together we respond to challenges like climate change, resource depletion and threats to biodiversity.

If you, or your community group would like a visit by one of our networkers, or would like further information please contact the project coordinator.
