Getting
Around Wellington
What is it?
The project encourages people to consider the many benefits of getting around without their cars… things like improving fitness, saving on petrol costs, less traffic congestion and safer streets.
Until June 2008 we have been delivering the project with funding from the Ministry for the Environment and in partnership with Wellington City Council, in the southern and eastern wards of Wellington city. From July 2008 Wellingon City Council are providing support to expand the programme city-wide. |
 |
| Reports and detailed information from the first 12 month phase of the project will be available on this site from 14 July 2008. |
One of the main ways of contacting participants for Getting Around Wellington is to deliver free travel behaviour advice sessions at public events and to community groups and workplaces.
If you’d like to talk to us about how you ‘get around’ Wellington, you can book a session for your group, or meet one of our staff for a one-on-one conversation. Timings range from 10 minutes for an individual conversation to 40 minutes for a group workshop.
During that time, we’ll discuss your particular travel needs, and help you find ways to reduce your car use that will also make life better for you. That includes making sure you have all the information and things you need to make those changes – like a working bicycle, advice on a safe bike route, or just an up-to-date bus timetable
With ‘Getting Around Wellington’, the Sustainability Trust hopes to assist people to lower their carbon emissions while enhancing the quality of their lives.
Getting Around – a proven history
The ‘Getting Around’ project was piloted in areas of Lower Hutt last year, in a joint initiative with Hutt City Council and greater Wellington Regional Council. Findings showed that 83% of participants in the project reduced their kilometres travelled by car – an outstanding result!
“I live quite a way from the shops and I can’t walk there, so by freezing extra milk I don’t take the car out just for milk when I run out!” Catherine Fisher, Normandale
“By working more from home, and using video-conferencing via the web for meetings, I save myself the time and hassle of driving into town.” Joanne Oliver, Wainuiomata
“I thought of walking to work and catching the bus home once a month so that I use the car less. I have to remember to be organised and take my book so that I have something to do if I miss the 5:00pm bus!” Muriel White, KoroKoro
