Book a free home energy assessment

We offer free advice on ways to make your home warmer, healthier and more energy-efficient.

Our home energy experts come to your home to assess and advise on practical solutions to improve your home comfort and energy performance. Through the Wellington Home Energy Saver, we offer three types of assessments: One for homeowners, one for tenants and one for those looking to renovate or build. Each of these assessments is free to all homes under Wellington City Council and also free for Toast Electric customers.

A Sustainability Trust Home Assessor gives advice to a customer on keeping her house warm, dray and healthy.

  • We only recommend products that are right for your home, our environment, and that maximise energy efficiency

  • All of our products are installed by trained, experienced and site safe installers and electricians

  • We will come to you and will never ever judge you for being in your PJs

  • One of our qualified Home Performance Advisors will visit your home and conduct an in-depth assessment of everything that affects the health and energy efficiency of your home.

Our assessor will do a walkthrough of your home, looking at your insulation, lighting, ventilation, heating and check for moisture ingress and draught issues. They will also identify ways for you to minimise water and energy use.

If you ask them to, they will also check if your home is suitable for solar energy generation or if it’s EV ready. Their whole-house approach is based on building science and ecodesign principles. Their goal is to help you create a warmer, drier, healthier home and it takes around 2 hours to complete the assessment.

From there, they will give you a personalised action plan and information booklet to help you create a more energy-efficient, sustainable and low-carbon home. They will also help you with products, provide you with quotes, and talk you through housing standards, subsidies, finance options and anything else you’d like the answer to.

Because they work for us, you can trust that any recommendations they make will be perfect for your home, environmentally friendly, and will maximise energy efficiency.

This assessment takes 1-2 hours to complete.

  • Maybe you’re looking to build or retrofit your home? Ask us about the Green Building Home Energy Assessment.

The Green Building Home Energy Assessment is for anyone who is planning a new build or renovation and wants to get advice on energy-efficient and sustainable design. This 90-minute consultation is done in tandem with one of our experienced assessors who will look at items such as orientation, glazing, insulation, ventilation, material selection and more. The best time for us to give input is prior to the detailed design phase, but we can offer advice on sketches, photos or just high-level ideas.

This assessment takes 1-2 hours to complete.

  • We offer a behaviour-based home energy assessment for tenants in the Wellington City Ratepayer region. This assessment arms tenants with the information they need to make sure they’re able to maintain a healthy home with low energy bills. Our trusted advisors will look at moisture levels (advise on ventilation and draught stopping measures), heating (advise on how to get the most out of heating), check your energy bill, and talk tenants through all the things they can do to reduce energy use and maintain a mould free home.

Following the home visit, the tenant will receive a report outlining the findings and recommended actions. Note that we do not report on physical elements of the property that are covered by the government’s Healthy Homes Standards. We may provide some general advice on these but recommend that tenants request their landlord to get a Healthy Homes Standards assessment from the Trust

This assessment takes around an hour to complete.

  • We also offer a free Warm, Dry, Home Assessment to homeowners outside of Wellington City, but in the Wellington Region (excluding the Wairarapa) This assessment looks at your insulation, heating, ventilation

Get in touch to book in with one of our experienced home energy assessors. From the assessment, you will get personalised advice to help you create a more energy-efficient home. You will receive recommendations and quotes for products that are right for your home, our environment, and that will maximise energy efficiency.

This assessment takes about an hour to complete.

Either way, if you’re a Wellington City Ratepayer - you are entitled to one of these assessments - all thanks to Wellington City Council as a part of becoming a Zero Carbon Capital by 2050 (Te Atakura – First to Zero).
